Disney-owned Hulu and NBCUniversal streamer Peacock are looking to scare up some more young viewers with a new series from DreamWorks Animation and horror master Eli Roth.
Fright Krewe is DreamWorks’ first scary show for older kids (pre-teens), and it revolves around a group of misfit teens who have to save New Orleans from a demonic threat. They soon find out, though, that building lasting friendships is just as challenging as battling evil.
The 2D-animated series (10 x 22 minutes) will drop on both streaming platforms later this year. Roth, who directed and wrote scripts for horror films such as Cabin Fever (2002) and Hostel (2005), created Fright Krewe with novelist James Frey (A Million Little Pieces).
Roth, Frey and DreamWorks Animation writers Joanna Lewis and Kristine Songco are the show’s exec producers, along with Shane Acker and Mitchell Smith, also at DreamWorks.
Roth is well-known for his adult-skewing work in the horror genre, but he’s also behind family-friendly feature film The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018), which earned US$130 million at box office against a US$42-million budget.
Hulu and Peacock have teamed up several times in recent years to order other DreamWorks shows for simultaneous release, including Dragons: The Nine Realms, The Croods: Family Tree and The Mighty Ones.
