LA-based broadcaster KC Global Media, which operates channels in APAC, has closed a deal to sell off linear kids channel Animax Korea to Aniplus—a TV channel and anime distributor based in Singapore and South Korea.

While the companies did not share details or pricing, Variety reports that the deal was valued at US$35.5 million.

Animax Korea launched in 2006 as part of a global network of Animax channels established by Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan, and was acquired by KC Global Media in 2020. The channel airs a lineup of classic and new animation content, including anime licensed from both regional and international studios. The content is dubbed in a variety of languages including Japanese, Mandarin and Korean.

Moving forward, Animax Korea will focus on bolstering its content catalogue under Aniplus’s ownership, according to a release.

Despite selling off the channel, KC Global remains focused on growing in South Korea, added Chien in a release. “Our regional distribution of Korean content is and will continue to be an important priority, as we leverage our strong relationships with studios, talent and broadcasters in South Korea.”

The country’s entertainment industry is experiencing a growth spurt as more companies focus on the South Korean market. Moonbug, for instance, appointed its first-ever commercial director for the region in April. And earlier this year, streaming giant Netflix committed to spending up to US$2.5 billion to produce more Korean content over the next four years.
