Popular online multiplayer game Among Us will soon be “venting” into the world of TV as a new animated series project gets underway at CBS Studios (Star Trek: Prodigy).

The company’s animation division, CBS Eye Animation Productions, is developing the show concept with Innersloth, the Washington-based game studio that created Among Us.

It will explore a similar premise as the game, in which crewmates on a spaceship must figure out which of them is secretly an alien shapeshifter (known as the “imposter”). The goal is to correctly identify and vent out the imposter before the ship is sabotaged and its crew killed.

Owen Dennis, the mastermind behind Cartoon Network series Infinity Train, is attached as creator and will also executive produce the series under his multi-year overall deal at CBS Studios.

LA’s Titmouse (Harriet the Spy) is on board to do the animation work. It’s the second game-to-series adaptation to join the studio’s slate after Angry Birds Mystery Island, which was announced earlier this month.

Forest Willard, Marcus Bromander and Carl Neisser will also executive produce for Innersloth, alongside Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski, Antonio Canobbio and Ben Kalina for Titmouse.

While it launched in 2018, Among Us really took off in 2020 as a means to socialize online during the COVID-19 pandemic. With 500 million monthly active users by Q4 2020, the game also generated more than four billion views on YouTube and upwards of 1.2 billion viewing sessions on Twitch.

The IP doesn’t really target a specific age group, but it quickly became popular among younger gamers as top influencers spent a lot of time streaming it. According to a 2022 report from game website LEVVVEL, one of the biggest demographic groups of Among Us players are teens (13- to 18-year-olds).

In a move to provide a more kid-friendly gaming experience, Among Us added a feature in 2021 that limited in-game chatting features, making it safer for players under the age of 13. That same year, British toymaker Toikido signed on to create figures, plush and playsets based on the game.
