Kid-centric audio platform Yoto has inked a key deal with Universal Music Group (UMG) to significantly expand its catalogue.
Under the agreement, the London-based company will be able to access artists and music titles under the UMG umbrella for its ad-free and screen-free devices.
Yoto provides more than 1,000 audio entertainment titles that are designed for young listeners, ranging from preschoolers to the nine-plus crowd. Accessible through playable cards that are compatible with Yoto devices, these titles include stories from Disney and Pixar, hit tunes from KIDZ BOP and educational podcasts from APM Studios.
Yoto has rolled out a first card under the UMG partnership today, featuring a greatest-hits collection from British rock band Queen (pictured). The company is also prepping more releases due out later this year that will feature music from reggae band Bob Marley & the Wailers and partner labels such as Motown Records and Disney Music Group.
Sarah Boorman, general manager of youth strategies at Universal Music UK, noted in a release that Yoto’s kid-friendly curation helps provide an accessible introduction to iconic music. This deal also lets Yoto bring “frontline” hits (popular songs released within the last 18 months) to its platform for the first time, starting with a compilation of tracks that will be unveiled later this year.
UMG is home to music labels such as Republic Records, Capitol, Def Jam and EMI—which work with popular contemporary artists like Taylor Swift and BTS, as well as legacy acts including Elton John and ABBA.
In one of its more recent kid-focused moves, UMG signed a deal with pocket.watch in July to rep music from popular creator-driven series like Ryan’s Mystery Playdate and Love, Diana Adventures.
