Apple TV+ is betting on kid-friendly thrills with its latest commission, which should deliver just in time for Halloween.
The streamer has ordered 10 x 22-minute series CURSES! from DreamWorks Animation for an October 27 debut. Targeting six to 11s, this 2D-animated show hails from creators Jim Cooper (DreamWorks Dragons) and Jeff Dixon (The Hurricane Heist).
CURSES! tells the story of two kids trying to lift an ancient family curse that has turned their dad into stone. To do this, they must join their mom on a journey to return artifacts that were stolen by their ancestors.
This marks DreamWorks Animation’s second foray into horror for kids, following closely behind Fright Krewe, which was announced in June. Director Eli Roth and writer James Frey created this series, which will debut on Hulu and Peacock on October 2.
Cooper and Dixon are executive producing CURSES! with Hollywood multi-hyphenate John Krasinski. Much like Roth, Krasinski is already well-versed in the horror genre from writing, directing and starring in the post-apocalyptic movie franchise, A Quiet Place.
Allyson Seeger, co-founder of Krasinski’s Sunday Night Productions banner (A Quiet Place), is also executive producing.
Earlier this year, Apple TV+ ordered BE@RBRICK from DreamWorks Animation, inspired by the same-name line of anthropomorphized bear figures from Japan’s Medicom Toy.
The streamer’s catalogue of shows includes Interrupting Chicken (which it recently renewed for a second season from Mercury Filmworks), Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock (The Jim Henson Company) and the ever-growing Peanuts franchise (WildBrain). This past May, Apple TV+ greenlit a new Peanuts series called Camp Snoopy. It’s due out in 2024, along with new special Snoopy Presents: Welcome Home, Franklin, which spotlights a lesser-known character from the world of Charlie Brown.
