London’s CAKE has signed on to manage international distribution for the CG-animated YouTube Original Sherwood (10 x 22 minutes, pictured), and it’s looking to build the show’s audience by bringing it to more broadcasters and streamers around the world.

New Zealand studio Toybox co-produced the tween series with Australia’s Baby Octopus, whose founders Diana Manson (Max & Ruby) and Megan Laughton (Peter Rabbit) created the Sherwood IP. The show is a retelling of Robin Hood, set in a dystopian London in the year 2270. And Robin is a teenage girl who seeks to bring down a corrupt regime while grappling with class inequalities and the devastating effects of climate change.

CAKE sees a lot of potential for the series because of how it handles serious topics like environmentalism, displacement and social justice, said CEO Ed Galton in a release.

YouTube launched the show’s first and only season in 2019. It’s available on YouTube Premium in eight languages and has generated more than 54 million views. Though no plans for a second season have been announced, this deal is part of an overall focus to take the series to “the next stage of growth,” said Manson in the release.

YouTube nixed its original kids content team as part of Google’s mass layoffs in January 2023. Craig Hunter, its global head of kids and family original content, has left the future of the platform’s kids content up in the air. Now, producers who made shows for YouTube are seeking buyers for their series that were previously only available on YouTube. CAKE has been one of the first to take some of these already-popular shows out to international buyers—the distributor sold 2D-animated YouTube Original Super Sema (42 x 11 minutes) to British broadcaster Sky in June.
