US streamer Hulu has picked up ABC Australia’s live-action horror/comedy series Crazy Fun Park to launch on October 1.

The 10 x 30-minute series is about a teen who discovers the ghost of his best friend in an abandoned theme park. ABC premiered it in January on its ABC ME linear channel and iview streamer. Since then, the show’s distributor, the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF), has sold it to international broadcasters such as BBC (UK), YLE (Finland), NRK (Norway), LRT (Lithuania), TVNZ (New Zealand) and RTV (Slovenia).

International buyers like the show because it deals with universal topics like death, grief and friendship, said ACTF CEO Jenny Buckland in a press release.

Aussie kidcos have been facing challenges for more than a year, as free-to-air channels in the country broadcast 296 fewer hours of local kids programming in 2022 compared to 2019, and streamers are not making up the difference. In a recent survey, the country’s producers noted that streamers aren’t offering enough money for budgets; they’re encouraging production without official greenlights; and they’re pressuring for additional rights and deliverables without giving anything in return.
