Gen Z is adopting AI rapidly in the UK, where 79% of 13- to 17-year-olds surveyed by industry watchdog Offcom say they’re using generative AI tools and services like ChatGPT and Bing chatbots, plus image generators such as DALL-E and Midjourney.

And according to the media org’s new Online Nation report, released today, 40% of kids ages seven to 12 are starting to get in on the action as well.

ChatGPT and My AI (a ChatGPT-powered chatbot on Snapchat) are already driving AI usage among kids. More than half (51%) of seven- to 17-year-olds have used My AI, including 75% of 13- to 17-year-old girls.

The report also reveals that YouTube, Facebook/Messenger, TikTok, SnapChat, Instagram and Pinterest are the top six social media platforms used by eight- to 12-year-olds. On average, this demo spends 63 minutes a day on YouTube alone.

Fewer of them (36%) use SnapChat, but they spend more time there (78 daily minutes on average), with 11- to 12-year-olds exhibiting particularly high usage. More than half of eight to 12s use TikTok (66%) for an average 46 minutes a day. And while 72% of kids use Facebook, they spend a scant three minutes on the platform.
