Disney Channel wraps up tween series Bunk’d

The broadcaster's longest-running live-action sitcom will not be renewed after the last 10 eps in its seventh season air later this year.

It’s the end of an era for Bunk’d, the live-action sitcom with the most-ever mileage on Disney Channel. The final 10 episodes of the tween comedy series are in production now to run later this year, but it will not be renewed for an eighth season.

Season seven was initially planned as a 20 x half-hour package, but production got disrupted by the 148-day WGA strike. Only the first 12 eps were completed when producers hit pause on filming in May, and they aired from July to December last year. Disney has now added an additional two eps to the original order, bringing the season up to 22 half hours—and the show’s overall episode total to over 150.

Bunk’d centers around a group of young teens learning about friendship and the wilderness while at summer camp—a stark change of pace from their lives back home in the city.

Targeting six to 11s, the show was created by Pamela Eells O’Connell (The Suite Life of Zack & Cody) and produced by It’s a Laugh Productions. Bunk’d premiered in 2015 as a spinoff from family comedy Jessie, which had just wrapped up a five-year run on Disney Channel.

Disney Branded Television’s Jenna Boyd, who was hired in October as SVP of development, will no doubt be working on projects to continue the linear net’s tween comedy legacy. Her remit is to oversee the scripted series development team for Disney+ and Disney Channel, and expand its multi-cam pipeline.
