BBC gives cash injections to 50-plus indie studios

An "unprecedented" number of applications for this year's Small Indie Fund has prompted the pubcaster to also provide pitching insights in addition to the financial support.

The BBC has selected 57 companies that will receive funding through its annual Small Indie Fund, and a few kids content producers  have made the list.

Around US$1.8 million is being divvied up between the recipients, and a BBC commissioning editor will also mentor their leaders on planning growth and reaching a wider audience. The fund targets companies working in kids content, drama, entertainment, comedy, factual and daytime programming that have annual incomes under US$12.6 million.

This year’s recipients hail from Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England. Some with kids work in their portfolios include Kent-based Flashing Light Media (CBeebies’ Magic Hands, pictured), Cardiff Productions in Wales (CBBC’s My Life: Locked in Boy) and London’s Big Little Fish Television (CBBC’s Meet the McQueens).

Prior to issuing its latest call for submissions, the Beeb was aware that indie producers in the UK were struggling to deal with rising production costs and a decline in commissions. But the “unprecedented number of applications” received has made it clear that they need more support. That’s why BBC Commissioning is planning to host a series of informational sessions in which its teams will share insights about what the pubcaster is looking for in pitches.

“The sheer number of strong applications we received is a testament both to the outstanding talent in our independent film sector, and the unprecedented challenges so many producers are currently facing,” said Emma Kayee, BBC Film’s head of production.

BBC launched the Small Indie Fund in 2020. This year, 77% of the companies receiving funding are led by execs from underrepresented groups—a new record. And most (67%) are from outside of London.

The full list of this year’s recipients is available on the BBC’s website
