YouTube is beating out Netflix and Disney+ as the streaming platform of choice among kids of all ages, according to a new report from Argentina-based research firm Kids Corp based on online surveys of 19,200 kids and teens in the US.
Conducted throughout 2023, the survey sampled three age groups: preschoolers (ages three to five), tweens (ages six to 12) and teens (ages 13 to 18), with parents participating in surveys on behalf of the youngest set.
Watching YouTube emerged as the most popular hobby among nearly 70% of respondents, followed by playing video games (62%), using social media (52%) and watching series/movies on VOD platforms (51%).
One offline activity that made the cut in fifth place was extracurricular sports (44%). This is yet another indicator that sports-related themes are ripe for kids content creators to harness, building on the findings of November 2023’s Global Kids Sports Report from We Are Family in the UK.
YouTube ranked as the go-to streamer for 69% of all age groups, ahead of Netflix (51%) and Disney+ (47%), which saw their status fall by 8% and 12%, respectively, compared to Kids Corp’s 2022 rankings.
The report also broke down favorite video games by age. Roblox won out with preschoolers, tweens and teens, with second place going to Pokémon GO with preschoolers and Minecraft with both of the older groups.
