On the heels of The Boy and the Heron winning an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film on Sunday, WBD’s Max has signed a new multi-year agreement with New York-based distributor GKIDS to extend its exclusive US streaming rights to Studio Ghibli’s film catalogue.
Max has not announced a release date for The Boy and the Heron yet, but it will drop later this year. Hayao Miyazaki wrote and directed this hand-drawn, 2D-animated movie about a grieving boy who enters a fantastical world in the wake of his mother’s death. It’s Ghibli’s second Oscar-winning film—the Japanese studio took home a golden statue for Spirited Away (another Miyazaki masterpiece) in 2003.
Max has been streaming Studio Ghibli films in the US since 2020. Other titles covered by the new deal that GKIDS has just brokered include Princess Mononoke and Earwig and the Witch.
