Paramount+ has removed 10 kids shows from its library, putting the streaming future of these titles in limbo.
Animated series Rugrats (the 2021 remake), Blue’s Clues & You! (pictured), It’s Pony, Middlemost Post, Ollie’s Pack, Santiago of the Seas and Big Nate have been cut, along with live-action titles Ryan’s Mystery Playdate, Are You Afraid of the Dark? (2019-2022) and That Girl Lay Lay.
When Paramount laid off its Noggin team last month, a spokesperson said kids content was still important to Paramount+ because it drives subscriptions, consumption and repeat viewing. But the streamer would seem to be backtracking from this position with the abrupt removal of such well-known IPs.
Paramount Global is looking to cut costs and build its value to potential buyers right now, which could explain this move to dump shows that aren’t the company’s biggest kids hits. Paramount foreshadowed the cuts in a Form 10-K annual report it issued in February, saying that its “focus on content with mass global appeal” would result in “removing select content from our platforms.” The report goes on to say that the company planned to abandon some projects that are in development and terminate some programming agreements.
When streaming cuts are made, kids content often feels it first, as we saw in 2022 when WBD’s Max announced that it was moving away from live-action kids and family programming and cut more than 30 shows.
