Building buzz and goodwill at the same time, Sony Pictures Entertainment is gearing up to host a series of May 12 charity pre-screenings of The Garfield Movie (pictured) in the UK before the film’s wider theatrical release on May 24.
These screenings will take place in more than 300 theaters across the country, thanks to participating exhibitors including Vue, Cineworld, ODEON, The Light, Empire, Everyman, Picturehouse and several indie cinemas.
Sony and its partners will donate all revenue generated from ticket sales to London-based nonprofit MediCinema, which screens films in hospitals, health facilities and support groups in order to improve patient wellbeing.
The charity owns six in-hospital screening facilities, three of which (Serennu Children’s Centre in Newport, Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London) will screen the film for patients first on May 11.
These screenings should also help build anticipation for the CG-animated feature’s wider theatrical release. Produced by Columbia Pictures and Alcon Entertainment, The Garfield Movie adapts the eponymous comic strip by Jim Davis, tagging along as the Monday-hating, lasagna-loving feline (voiced by Chris Pratt) reunites with his long lost dad and accidentally gets caught in the middle of a heist.
