Chicago-based Weigel Broadcasting is gearing up to launch MeTV Toons, a new US channel that curates retro animated content from several of the entertainment industry’s biggest studios and distributors.
This 24-hour linear net will start airing on June 25, with a companion FAST channel available on select streaming services .
Warner Bros. Discovery—one of the venture’s key content partners—has licensed out a package of classics from franchises including Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, Scooby-Doo, The Flintstones, Popeye, Yogi Bear and Top Cat.
Based on what’s been teased so far, MeTV Toons’ lineup should feature a broad range of formats, with plenty of series, made-for-TV features and shorts in the mix. The channel has also acquired rights to vintage gems such as Betty Boop (Paramount), Rocky and Bullwinkle (WildBrain) and The Woody Woodpecker Show (Universal).
This throwback-focused strategy should certainly attract nostalgic adults, but young kids interested in discovering early iterations of their well-established favorite toons are also likely to tune in.
Animation historian/author Jerry Beck is on board to produce a series of interstitials exploring television’s most famous cartoon archetypes. (Beck has leveraged his considerable expertise in the genre into writing books such as The 50 Greatest Cartoons and The Hanna-Barbera Treasury.) Weigel has also lined up veteran voice actor Bob Bergen, the four-time Emmy nominee behind iconic characters like Porky Pig and Tweety Bird, as the network’s signature announcer.
MeTV Toons joins an umbrella of Wiegel-owned broadcast networks that already includes MeTV, MeTV+, Heroes & Icons, Start TV, Catchy Comedy, Dabl, MOVIES! and Story Television.
