REPORT: Europe is driving anime’s latest boom

While APAC is still hungry for this animated content genre, seven of the 10 markets showing the biggest demand increases are European, Ampere Analysis finds.

A new report from Ampere Analysis has revealed a steep rise in anime interest developing in what some might consider to be a surprising international region.

The big takeaway from the UK-based researcher’s Anime: Where are the global opportunities for growth? study is that Europe is driving a new wave of popularity for the genre. Ampere has found that seven of the 10 markets with the biggest spikes in anime interest are in Europe: Measurements in Germany, Finland, Italy, the UK, France, Poland and Spain have all increased from 3% to 9% between 2020 and 2024.

European content buyers have been quick to tap into this demand through acquisitions and co-productions, leading to a 42% increase in the number of anime titles available in the region—from 1,945 in 2019 to 2,755 titles last year. Streamers such Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Crunchyroll are behind most of this growth, and Netflix alone has expanded its anime catalogue from 602 titles to 891 in this same time frame.

But Ampere says there’s still plenty of opportunity for anime imports in the European market, and more broadcasters and streamers should invest to set themselves up for long-term growth.
