The latest edition of D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event unfolded over the weekend (August 9 to 11) in Anaheim, California, offering plenty of sneak-peeks and info about new projects on the way from Disney’s various divisions.
Pixar, which is leading this year’s box office race so far with its billion-dollar grosser Inside Out 2, announced Dream Productions, a new four-part spinoff series to the franchise. CCO Pete Docter revealed that the show about the studio inside protagonist Riley’s mind will launch on Disney+ sometime next year. Pixar is also prepping a new movie called Hoppers for 2026 that revolves around an animal-loving girl who “hops” her consciousness into a robotic (and adorable) beaver. And finally, Docter confirmed that Incredibles 3 is officially in the works, although no release date has been set yet.

Hoppers, an upcoming body-swap comedy from Pixar.
Speaking of new projects, actor Dwayne (“the Rock”) Johnson used his D23 stage time to share a new film he has in the works called Monster Jam. This live-action family feature is all about monster truck competitions and will see Johnson team up with Disney and Florida-based Feld Entertainment, which operates the Monster Jam motorsport events tour. Johnson was also part of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ showcase to unveil the first full-length trailer for Moana 2, which is due out on November 27. So far, the trailer has racked up more than seven million views on YouTube since Friday.
Disney teased exclusive footage and concept art from several other features in its sequel-heavy pipeline, including Zootopia 2 (2025), Toy Story 5 (2026) and Frozen 3 (2027). And coinciding with D23, the studio released teasers for live-action pics Mufasa: The Lion King (December 20) and Snow White (March 21, 2025).
On Saturday, the media giant put the spotlight on parks and experiences. Upcoming kids attractions in the works for its Orlando destinations include a land dedicated to Disney villains at the Magic Kingdom Park, a Monsters, Inc. world at Hollywood Studios and an Encanto-based attraction in Animal Kingdom. As previously announced, Disney is making a US$60-billion investment in this division over the next decade.
Gaming is another sector on Disney’s radar, and it made a big move in February when it acquired a US$1.5-billion equity stake in Fortnite maker Epic Games. D23 gave attendees more details on how the partnership will integrate Disney IPs into the game franchise. The next season of Fortnite, titled Absolute Doom, will be Marvel-themed with a focus on iconic villain Doctor Doom. (There’s a transmedia strategy underway here where fans who play the game can also pick up on important clues for upcoming Marvel movies.) And skins featuring Maleficent, Cruella de Vil, Captain Hook and The Incredibles will also be added to the game this fall.
D23 wrapped on Sunday with the Disney Legends Awards honoring 14 people who have made a remarkable impact on the Mouse House. Actor-singer Miley Cyrus, who starred in Disney Channel tween series Hannah Montana (2006 to 2011), became the youngest person to receive this honor. Other 2024 honorees include Colleen Atwood, Angela Bassett, Martha Blanding, James L. Brooks, James Cameron, Jamie Lee Curtis, Steve Ditko, Harrison Ford, Mark Henn, Frank Oz, Kelly Ripa, Joe Rohde and John Williams.
