Amazon India has finalized its acquisition of select assets belonging to Mumbai-based OTT company MX Player—most significantly, its same-name free AVOD service.
The media giant has merged MX with its own ad-based Amazon miniTV platform under a unified brand called Amazon MX Player. With a combined reach of more than 250 million unique users in the Indian market, this new free streamer is now one of the biggest in the country.
Amazon and MX agreed on acquisition terms in June 2024, with local media reporting the deal to be valued in the range of US$80 million to US$100 million. This figure represents a significant drop in value, given that India’s Times Internet purchased a majority stake in MX for an estimated US$140 million in 2018. (MX Player originated as a video player for Android that was developed by South Korea’s J2 Interactive in 2011.)
Amazon MX Player’s programming library spans multiple genres and regional languages, including Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. “We will offer high-quality entertainment and streaming experiences faster than we could have done independently, while continuing to keep the service free,” said Karan Bedi, head of Amazon MX Player. Amazon also plans to continue investing in original content for the service.
Its homegrown live-action titles include teen/YA shows such as Crushed, School Friends and Campus Diaries and family series Yeh Meri Family (pictured). Amazon MX Player also offers licensed kids animated movies including Pixy Dragons (2019), Louis & Luca—Mission to the Moon (2018), A Frozen Christmas (2016) and Pocahontas (1995).
