In her first consulting gig since leaving Nelvana Studios at the end of July, kids media veteran Athena Georgaklis has joined the team behind preschool series Woodchuckchucks.
Québec-based studios Happy Camper Média and Maki Média are co-producing this 2D-animated toon about a pair of woodchuck twins contemplating their similarities and differences as they grow up and discover themselves in their family’s general store. A first season packaged as three x seven minutes and four x three minutes was commissioned by the marblekids YouTube channel (118,000 subscribers) to premiere in late 2024 or early 2025.
Georgaklis will rep the project at major markets on the horizon, including MIPCOM this month and Kidscreen Summit in the new year (February 9 to 12, San Diego). She is keen to meet with potential co-producers, distributors and broadcasters—and one of her priorities is to help shore up financing to get a second season over the line.
Well-versed in the world of co-pros and financing kids content, Georgaklis vacated her most recent post as VP of Nelvana Studios on July 25, marking the end of more than 20 years with parentco Corus Entertainment. During this time, she held titles such as head of development for Nelvana and director of original content for Teletoon, commissioning and producing shows such as 6Teen, Atomic Betty and Millie Magnificent.
“It is a privilege to be even a small part of the Woodchuckchucks team as they expand into new markets,” says Georgaklis. “I look forward to sharing this lovely show with the kids content community.”
