The 10th edition of the Video Game Awards took place last night at the Peacock Theater in LA, with PlayStation Studios’ Team Asobi claiming Game of the Year for Astro Bot and three other awards as well.
The family-friendly adventure game is a PlayStation 5 exclusive and was nominated in seven categories. In addition to claiming the night’s biggest prize, it also came out on top in Best Game Direction, Best Family Game and Best Action/Adventure. Astro Bot beat out several highly acclaimed titles to win Game of the Year, including Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree (FromSoftware), Black Myth: Wukong (Game Science) and Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth (Square Enix).
Meanwhile, SEGA studio Atlus won three times with its role-playing game Metaphor: Refantazio (Best RPG, Best Narrative and Best Art Direction), tying with LocalThunk’s poker-themed Balatro (Debut Indie Game, Best Independent Game and Best Mobile Game) for second-most wins of the night.
The VGA ceremony also played host to several new game announcements, including PlayStation Studios’ Naughty Dog (The Last of Us, Crash Bandicoot) revealing a new sci-fi actioner called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, SEGA unveiling Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and Ghost Town Games (Overcooked) debuting the first trailer for its spooky co-op family game Stage Fright.
