The Phantom of the Opera anime adaptation unmasked

Andrew Lloyd Webber's rebranded company wants to turn his hit musical into a broader franchise.

LW Entertainment could inspire a whole new generation of theater kids as it considers an anime treatment for The Phantom of the Opera.

Owned by renowned composer and theatrical producer Andrew Lloyd Webber, the company officially changed its name yesterday from the Really Useful Group. This rebrand was accompanied by ambitious plans for adaptations and franchise extensions of Webber’s classic works.

Among them is a possible anime version of Webber’s classic stage musical The Phantom of the Opera. Based on Gaston Leroux’s 1909 novel of the same name, the musical follows a mysterious masked figure who haunts the Paris Opera House and takes an interest in a young opera singer named Christine.

To “explore opportunities” for this anime adaptation, LW has tapped producer Justin Leach from New York/Tokyo-based prodco Qubic Pictures (Star Wars: Visions). “This project is a rare opportunity to unite the grandeur of musical theatre with the artistry of Japanese animation—two beloved traditions that have touched audiences around the world,” Leach said.

In other plans for the musical beyond the screen, LW has also signed a publishing deal with Penguin Random House. The initiative will kick off in fall 2026 with a YA novel called Our Strange Duet—a retelling of the story from Christine’s perspective that will be published by Delacorte Press, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books. The title should benefit from the recent surge in popularity of the “romantasy” book genre, which has seen a huge influx of young readers thanks to TikTok.

LW Entertainment’s new franchise plans for the classic IP follow nearly a year after Disney Branded TV started developing a YA-skewing Phantom of the Opera movie under director and EP Kenny Ortega (High School Musical).
