Newly private Boat Rocker Studios has acquired a majority stake in fellow Toronto-based animation banner (and frequent collaborator) Industrial Brothers.
It’s an expanded investment for Boat Rocker, which previously took an undisclosed minority ownership position in Industrial Brothers in December 2015—back when Boat Rocker was known as Temple Street Productions.
The two partners have also renewed their first-look co-production deal, paving the way for more partnerships in kids TV. To date, their collaborative track record has yielded hits like Daniel Spellbound, Dino Ranch, Remy & Boo and Kingdom Force. And they’re also working together on upcoming spinoff series Dino Ranch: Island Explorers (pictured).
In addition to company co-founder/chief creative officer Matthew Fernandes, Industrial Brothers’ board of directors will now include Boat Rocker founders David Fortier and Ivan Schneeberg. And Fernandes will also work closely with Boat Rocker’s president of global rights, franchise and content strategy Jon Rutherford on shaping strategy for animation and kids content.
No changes to Industrial Brothers’ corporate structure have been reported—Fernandes will continue to lead the studio and COO Tammy Semen remains in charge of production and day-to-day operations.
In a release, Boat Rocker described today’s deal as a further commitment “to the support and financing of Industrial Brothers’ robust development slate” and a sign of its confidence in future opportunities for the studio. Fortier and Schneeberg also emphasized the strong demand from audiences for original IP that connects with kids and families.
This enhanced investment notably follows in the wake of a management buyout with Blue Ant Media that has returned Boat Rocker Studios to operating as an independent private studio.
