Roblox takes on YouTube with a video-sharing feature

"Moments" will let users aged 13 and up capture, edit and share content, incentivizing creators to keep their Roblox vids on the platform.

Roblox gameplay videos are wildly popular on platforms like YouTube. Now Roblox itself is trying to tap into that success by testing a new feature that will let users create, share and discover short-form videos—without having to head anywhere else.

The new feature, called Moments, is in beta now, before a broader launch on the popular platform for user-generated games. Players age 13 and up can create and discover these videos, which are capped at 30 seconds. Users can trim their clips, add music (Roblox has a catalogue of safe-to-use music through a partnership with DistroKid) and add a description before publishing it on Roblox.

Users who watch Moments can react with emojis, and push a “Join” button to instantly hop into the experience the gameplay comes from—which could benefit creators by sending more players directly to their games.

All content is subject to moderation before posting, and users can report inappropriate content.

Roblox plans to share the tech behind these tools with creators sometime later this year. Creators will then be able to incorporate their own systems for fans to capture and discover gameplay videos. For example, a racing game might add a trackside billboard that shows off clips made by users, adding more engagement than a typical static leaderboard.

Specifics on how to create Moments are available on Roblox’s help section

Roblox is making it clear that this feature is a way to take on the likes of YouTube, which has long long benefited from Roblox users creating videos and sharing them off-platform. Roblox-related content has a staggering amount of views on YouTube, according to Roblox, which cited YouTube data in a release about the feature.

“We believe that the time people spend together on Roblox, the epic victories, the hilarious fails, and the unforgettable moments, deserve to be shared,” the company said in the release. “For years, users have been doing this off-platform, creating a massive presence with Roblox-related content garnering over 1 trillion video views on YouTube.” From July to August this year alone, users captured more than 930 million screenshots, and recorded more than 240 million videos, Roblox said.

Roblox unveiled the new feature at its annual Roblox Developers Conference, where it promotes its capabilities and shows off new features.
