More than 50 years after its TV debut, Bagpuss is being resurrected for a sequel on the big screen.

Birmingham’s Threewise Entertainment (Rock Island Mysteries) has come on board to develop a family-friendly movie based on the stuffed cloth cat character that originated in a BBC stop-motion series in 1974. Set in late Victorian times, the show revolved around Bagpuss, who resides at an old store and comes to life with several toy friends to fix broken objects brought in by a girl named Emily.

Threewise’s live-action/animated sequel movie is planned for a theatrical release in 2027, buoyed by an investment from Creative UK through the West Midlands IP Fund.

It will see Bagpuss and pals wake up in present-day Britain and continue their mission of mending lost and broken items. To stay true to the character’s roots, Threewise is working closely with the estate of the show’s creators, Peter Firmin and Oliver Postgate (whose son Daniel developed and approved the movie’s storyline before he died in June).

Firmin and Postgate produced the original series through their banner Smallfilms. Despite only boasting 13 episodes, it established an enduring pop-culture footprint in the UK, thanks to repeat airings. Bagpuss topped a 1999 BBC regional poll as kids’ favorite show of all time, and a 2008 British survey saw the character crowned as the all-time favorite children’s TV animal—beating out strong competition like Shaun the Sheep and Paddington Bear.
