South Africa’s Triggerfish (Supa Team 4) is setting up a new UK studio to take advantage of tax incentives and build on its European growth.

There’s no word yet on which city the new hub will be based in. But the expansion means the company will be able to harness the tax incentives and talent pool of the UK—and will have the strategic advantage of being closer to some of its key clients and partners. For instance, Triggerfish has done animation service work on multiple projects from London-based Magic Light Pictures, including Tiddler (pictured) and Zog.

The new base will support Triggerfish in ramping up work on feature films, series and specials, as well as service animation. The studio is now actively recruiting for a head of UK to take the lead on new projects, plus multiple positions to work on an upcoming special.

The move is a welcome sign that the UK’s tax incentives may be providing relief amid a tough time for the nation’s animation industry.

“By opening in the UK, we can create new opportunities for talent where they live while offering creative spaces where teams can come together,” said Triggerfish CEO Stuart Forrest, who called the move a “natural next step” in growing the company’s European business, after opening a studio in Ireland in 2020.

Triggerfish already has a lot of experience working with international teams. For Disney+’s Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire, the company coordinated more than 1,500 crew members from nine studios across three continents.
