Dick Wolf gets into kids content with a detective podcast

EXCLUSIVE: The prodco behind Law & Order hopes Patrick Picklebottom: Everyday Mysteries with Pinna leads to more content projects for this audience.

Law & Order creator Dick Wolf’s company Wolf Entertainment is trying its hand at kids content, partnering with Pinna to make a new podcast called Patrick Picklebottom: Everyday Mysteries, an adaptation of a same-name book series.

Aiming for six- to 11-year-olds, the eight x 18-minute audio series focuses on a young boy with a knack for solving mysteries. Patrick and his friends pick up on clues and deduce solutions to puzzling cases that crop up in their neighborhood. The episodes are all self-contained mysteries, but there’s also a broader storyline about a treasure hunt that plays out across the entire season. Kids audio platform Pinna will premiere the podcast on October 14.

Patrick Picklebottom is based on a book series from writer Jay Miletsky and illustrator Gary Wilkinson (published by Lyric & Stone) that has four titles spanning chapter books and picture books. A revised version of the first book (Patrick Picklebottom: Everyday Mysteries), originally published in 2023, was released this month along with two more short mysteries.

Wolf Entertainment is dipping its toe into the kids market with this podcast project, but it plans to embark on a much broader content expansion for this audience, says Elliot Wolf, EVP of digital media. “As we move into kids & family content, it makes sense to start in audio, which is now a go-to destination for parents,” he notes. “We hope it’s just the beginning of bringing engaging stories to families.”

The company is best-known for its adult mystery and crime series, and it was a natural next step to tell a mystery story to kids, said Dick Wolf in a release. Leaning on a mystery formula is also a compelling way to get kids engaged and help them develop critical thinking and analytical skills.

New York-based podcast company Realm acquired Pinna in 2023 to get into the kids & family market. Pinna, which targets the three to 12 set, has ordered original series, songs, audiobooks, interactive games and also licensed podcasts. Last year, it acquired three podcasts from ABC Australia.

The trailer for the series was exclusively shared first with Kidscreen, courtesy of Wolf Entertainment.
