Polly Pocket’s live-action cinematic project has just picked up Hello Sunshine as a partner.

Reese Witherspoon’s banner has signed on to co-develop the movie, which has been brewing for more than four years at Mattel Studios and Amazon MGM Studios. Mattel has also recruited screenwriters Jordan Weiss (Freakier Friday) and Dan Brier (Sweethearts) to pen the script. 

Inspired by Mattel’s 1980s brand of tiny collectible toys that come inside compact playsets, the Polly Pocket film is just one of many toy-based features on a busy Mattel Studios slate that also includes buzzy adaptations of Hot Wheels and American Girl. 

Polly Pocket has the potential to attract the kind of multi-generational audience that came out for 2023’s doll-based hit Barbie—while also appealing to Gen Alpha, thanks to an ongoing 2D-animated series from Mattel and WildBrain that launched in 2018.

Actor Lily Collins (pictured) is still attached to star and produce through her Cast Study Films, but the film has undergone some changes since the exit of Girls creator Lena Dunham (who was originally attached to write and direct) last year.

It’s among the first major project announcements from Candle Media-owned Hello Sunshine since it appointed Maureen Polo to take over from Sarah Harden as CEO last month. The company has been restrategizing significantly lately, most recently closing down its unscripted division, according to a new Bloomberg report.

While the Polly Pocket film aligns with Hello Sunshine’s core specialty of female-focused content, it’s a sign that the studio is still keeping an eye on the kids & family space. There hasn’t been much news on its previously announced kids film Goldilocks and the Three Bears—but it has been working on Elle, a high school-set Legally Blonde prequel due out on Prime Video next year, and the recently announced Miss Nelson is Missing adaptation for Netflix.
