Amazon Kids+ greenlights Jim Henson’s Monster Dance

EXCLUSIVE: John Tartaglia and Russell Hicks created this CG-animated shorts series, which aims to get kids moving.

Amazon Kids+ and The Jim Henson Company want to encourage kids to let their inner monster out—on the dance floor. The SVOD has ordered CG-animated shorts series Jim Henson’s Monster Dance (10 x three minutes), which features animated monsters busting a move and inviting kids to groove along.

At its heart, Monster Dance (previously titled Monster Jam) aims to show that the physical movement of dance isn’t just good for the body—it can also be a positive and healthy way for kids to express big emotions.

Production is starting now, with no premiere date set yet for Amazon Kids+ in the US, UK, Canada, Germany and Japan. And The Jim Henson Company is on its way to MIP, looking for international broadcast and distribution partners.

Frequent Henson collaborator John Tartaglia (Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock) and former Nickelodeon exec Russell Hicks created the series. The pair also executive produce it, alongside Halle Stanford and Lisa Henson. The Henson Digital Puppetry Studio is doing the animation using motion capture, with actors puppeteering the CG-animated characters in real time.

Jim Henson’s Monster Dance features some “ferociously choreographed dance numbers,” Tartaglia said in a release. The show’s choreographer is Mandy Moore, who worked on Dancing with the Stars and Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.

Amazon Kids+ is a subscription-based service for three to 12s that carries series, books, games, music and Alexa Skills. In recent years, it has tapped into the popularity of existing brands, with new orders including Angry Birds Mystery Island (Rovio) and Dino Dex (Sinking Ship). Craig Hunter, who leads series development and production for Amazon Kids+, told Kidscreen earlier this year that the streamer wants TV concepts based on “brands, characters and trends that kids already know and love.”
