Kids channel Spacetoon is buoying the Arab animation sector with the acquisition of an equity stake in Samaka Studio.

Announced today at the Saudi Film Confex (pictured), the deal is a part of a broader, long-term pact between the Dubai-based kidsnet and the Cairo-based animation studio (which also operates in Abu Dhabi). Under the deal, Samaka plans to ramp up its slate of original IPs, working with Spacetoon to build out animation franchises that have multi-platform potential and global appeal. The studio will retain creative independence and will deliver exclusive titles to Spacetoon.

Launched in 2018, Samaka provides animation services for films, trailers, commercials and brands—with a focus on reaching younger audiences through animation that celebrates Egyptian cultural heritage.

The banner has been making more of a push recently into original content with upcoming titles such as the 2D-animated film Kamaroza. The project, about a 16-year-old girl and a wandering storyteller who travel to a magical city, was pitched at MIFA earlier this year and is currently in development.

Samaka and Spacetoon are also planning to establish a “regional hub for animation innovation,” according to a release, though there are no further specifics on what this will entail.

With a strong presence across MENA, the Spacetoon channel is available in more than 25 countries, most recently expanding into the Turkish market with Spacetoon Türkiye. Aside from acquiring international titles like Bluey and Beep Boop, the broadcaster is also investing in local content to reach more family audiences. Recently, Spacetoon partnered with popular chefluencer Abir El-Saghir for a new animated series called Abir and the Little Prince
