How linear channel KidOO is expanding across Latin America

FEATURE: This fledgling pay-TV net is mapping out a strategy around short-form content and high-quality localization.

KidOO is barely a year old, but the linear pay-TV channel already reaches 7.5 million households in Latin America—with more markets and new content in the forecast. Mediaco 2BeNamed launched this ad-free channel for three- to nine-year-olds in April 2024.

“We saw an opportunity to add value to the traditional pay-TV offering at a time when all eyes were on streaming,” says CEO and co-founder Edgar Spielmann, adding that linear broadcasting is still a go-to media option for families in Latin America, which has roughly 110 million kids in the 10-and-under bracket (Statista, 2023).

Targeting this population, KidOO features a mix of international titles and local content, leaning heavily on acquisitions to build out its nascent library, which currently features 35 franchises. “By far, Pororo the Little Penguin and Tayo the Little Bus, both from South Korea’s Iconix, are our strongest performers,” Spielmann notes, describing these two music-driven toons as tentpoles of the channel’s programming lineup.

KidOO is currently operating in eight countries (Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Venezuela, Ecuador, Uruguay and Peru) and will expand into more markets next year.

What is KidOO looking for?
The team is on the hunt for short-format content (11-minute eps or less) with proven engagement on digital platforms like YouTube, or in countries with viewing behavior similar to LatAm, says Spielmann. “We prefer shows that are bright, energetic and non-violent.” While animation is a top priority, the channel is open to unscripted live-action content that taps into such subjects as science, exploration, nature and crafts. Scripted live-actioners are not high on the shopping list at the moment, unless they’re short and highly character-driven.

Acquired content must be dubbed in neutral Latin American Spanish. For example, KidOO launched Wind Sun Sky’s The Future Chicken Today Show (16 x 12 minutes) in April under a partnership that saw the channel facilitate collaborative dubbing work and supervise the process. “We plan to continue supporting high-quality localization of international content for the region,” says Spielmann. Another new strategy for KidOO is a shift into more commissioning and originals. “We’re absolutely interested in early-stage development. Our current focus is on expanding across LatAm, but as we grow, we [want] to collaborate with producers to help shape KidOO’s [unique] identity.”

Recent releases
In June, the channel licensed multiple Moonbug Entertainment shows spanning 10 preschool franchises—including CG-animated CoComelon: Nina’s Familia (16 x three minutes) and live-action series Meekah (19 x 14 minutes)—to air throughout the summer. Coming up next is the second season of Hola Flinko (26 x five minutes), an original homegrown series that stars a curious platypus on a mission to discover native animals in the region. Season two is slated to launch this fall.

KidOO is also developing an app that will be available exclusively to pay-TV subscribers who already access the channel. “This will offer a TV everywhere/digital TV model,” says Spielmann. “Children will enjoy the content across multiple devices, while [still] reinforcing the value of pay-TV and broadband bundles.”
