Several industry veterans have joined forces to launch a new privately funded animation company.

Based in LA, The Cartoon Coalition will focus on making animated films, series and streaming content, with a senior team that’s comprised of founders Larry Kasanoff (pictured, CEO), Sean Catherine Derek (chief creative officer) and Kiran Joshi (chief animation officer). 

Each exec brings significant kids content experience to the table. While Kasanoff is best known for producing the Mortal Kombat franchise, he also runs a Threshold Animation banner that has worked on films and LBE for IPs such as Spider-Man and LEGO. Derek is a longtime animation scriptwriter who was part of the Emmy-winning team behind Batman: The Animated Series. And Joshi, who heads up Nepalese studio Incessant Rain, is a former Disney supervisor who worked on titles like Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin.

The Cartoon Coalition has also appointed music producers Jimmy Ienner and Michael Lloyd as vice chairman and chief musical officer, respectively. And Disney alum Joel Sloss will serve as chief technology officer, with a remit to integrate AI into the studio’s animation process. “Our goal is to use the latest tools to enhance the work of talented artists, which will enable compelling storytelling that takes less time to bring to audiences,” said Sloss in a release. 

The company has already gotten the ball rolling with three original feature scripts for kids and families ready to be shopped at next month’s American Film Market. 

World’s Top Monsters takes place on the set of a reality competition show featuring a wide variety of monsters—ranging from classics like Dracula to modern spooks like the Social Media Monster. There’s also a gaming-inspired film called Level Up, which deals with the invasion of an evil alien video game. And finally, Krazed for Karaoke follows a group of wild animals whose lives are changed when they discover a discarded karaoke machine.

Looking to build a global presence right off the bat, The Cartoon Coalition will have operations spanning India, Asia and the Middle East, overseen by Threshold’s associate producer Priyanjali Bagaria.
