Popular STEM YouTuber Mark Rober is adding a new category of entertainment to his growing kids media empire, signing a multi-book publishing deal with Scholastic.
Rober is a former NASA engineer whose exciting science-based videos (featuring him doing things like building his own roller coaster) have attracted more than 71 million subscribers and generated almost 14 billion views on YouTube. He’s already made moves to branch out into TV (with a Samsung TV Plus FAST channel and a Netflix competition series due out next year) and consumer products (with a multi-year global licensing deal with Moose Toys)—and now he’s got his sights set on books.
Structured under his company CrunchLabs, Rober’s wide-ranging deal with Scholastic covers global publishing rights in all languages. The partners are initially planning to market guidebooks, activity books and a line of titles from Scholastic’s Klutz Press STEM Lab DIY/activity kit imprint. The first two books in this deal, Lava vs. Laser and Extreme Engineering, will hit shelves in fall 2026.
To promote them, Scholastic is ambitiously launching a new travelling event called Discovery Fair, which it will stock with STEM-focused books and activity kits for kids of all ages, including the ones from CrunchLabs. There’s no word yet on how many of these events will take place in the new year—becasue it’s up to individual locations to volunteer to host them—but Scholastic’s annual book fairs are an international school staple, and Rober’s range will be sold there, too.
This deal will help Scholastic tap into Rober’s huge audience, said SVP and publisher of global licensing brands Debra Dorfman, who brokered it with CrunchLabs’ chief product officer Rachele Harmuth. “This is an amazing opportunity to translate the magic of Mark’s incredible videos into books that will encourage young minds to see science as an adventure,” said Dorfman.
