It’s official: At US$1.703 billion, Zootopia 2 has taken the crown as Hollywood’s new highest-grossing animated film of all time.

Disney speedily dethroned itself for this honor, surpassing 2024’s Pixar movie Inside Out 2, which tapped out at US$1.699 billion. It also puts Zootopia 2 in ninth spot on the list of highest-grossing movies across all genres, close behind juggernaut Disney franchises like Marvel, Star Wars and Avatar.

Not even two months have passed since its November 26 premiere, but Zootopia 2 has been on a spectacular theatrical run. It started with a record-setting US$559.5-million debut in five days, the highest global animated opening of all time. It’s also the fastest PG-rated flick to do US$1 billion in ticket sales, a feat it achieved in a mere 17 days.

Is it the biggest animated film of all time? Not quite. That record belongs to last year’s Chinese feature Ne Zha 2, which had a US$2.2-billion haul. Still, that was an older-skewing PG-13 title, so Disney still gets to say it has the highest-grossing PG-rated animated film ever.

One of the biggest factors at play in Zootopia 2‘s success is the film’s popularity in the overseas market, where Disney Animation’s targeted marketing push has clearly paid off. The film has made US$390 million domestically so far, versus a whopping US$1.313 billion from international markets. And a significant piece of that international take comes from China, where the film has made US$619 million to date. Although this once-reliable market has become a less lucrative box-office force for Hollywood in recent years, Zootopia 2 has been an exception, thanks to China’s strong affection for the franchise.

The film still has momentum, which means it could continue to break more records during the remainder of its theatrical run, including largest domestic earnings by a 2025 release. A Minecraft Movie currently has this distinction, with Lilo & Stitch in a close second place; both pics have generated roughly US$423 million each. Zootopia 2 is sitting in fifth spot on this list right now, but it’s very close to overtaking both Jurassic World Rebirth and Superman.

Looking ahead on its theatrical calendar, Disney Animation Studios is gearing up for the release of Hexed around Thanksgiving, followed by Frozen III in 2027. But in the meantime, it’s safe to bet on the Mouse House greenlighting a third Zootopia movie.
