PBS KIDS, the CBC and Sky Kids have co-commissioned a new animated series for preschoolers based on Scholastic’s popular Clifford book series to bring the fan-favorite character back to TV in the US, Canada and the UK.
9 Story Media Group is producing the 26 x 22-minute series, aptly called Clifford the Big Red Dog. Each episode has two 11-minute stories. Brown Bag Films is animating it for a 2027 release. Scholastic acquired 100% of the economic interest in 9 Story in 2024, and this will be one of the first projects they’re collaborating on to hit the screen.
The project is based on Norman Bridwell’s book series, which has more than 150 titles and more than 135 million copies in print in 20 languages worldwide, according to a release. The series is a buddy comedy about a kid and her giant canine best friend, who together learn about developing social skills, problem solving and making a difference in their communities. The new show will differentiate itself from previous versions by leaning more into the comedy around Clifford and his size and playfulness, said Vince Commisso, president and CEO of 9 Story Media Group and an EP on Clifford.
Jason Hopley (Corn & Peg, Big and Small) is head writer, with Cory Bobiak (Peg + Cat) directing.
Clifford has been a licensing darling for decades. Licensing companies interested in working with this latest iteration can contact 9 Story Brands, which has worldwide consumer products rights.
Beyond the series, there are also plans to develop a digital game for preschoolers that builds on the social skill development lessons in the series.
PBS KIDS is a natural partner for the new series, since it aired both the previous 2000 and 2019 animated series, and already has three games featuring the character. “Clifford has been a favorite with children and families for generations, and we can’t wait to reintroduce this Big Red Dog to PBS KIDS audiences across the country,” said Sara DeWitt, SVP and GM of PBS KIDS and Education. “Giving kids the skills, knowledge and encouragement they need to connect with others and sustain relationships is more vital than ever to prepare them for success in school and life.”
CBC Kids has carried Clifford too, and bringing the IP back is a nice get, says Marie McCann, senior director of children’s content. The CBC will premiere the series in winter 2027. “We are thrilled to welcome everyone’s favorite big red dog back to CBC Kids for a whole new generation of Canadian kids and families,” said McCann. “Clifford’s warmth, humor and sense of community will appeal to viewers of all ages.”
There are several factors at play making a Clifford revival a potentially smart move. Nostalgia is big with both parents and kids right now, and there’s been a surge in kids book adaptation efforts recently. Plus, Scholastic just launched its first-ever branded streaming app in September, featuring Clifford shows. And TheaterWorksUSA has created a musical adaptation of the IP in the US for kids and families that previews later this month.
