If you see a heap of one-sheets and show bibles inching along the Croisette next month, don’t be alarmed. It’s not a revolution of physics; it’s probably just Adina Pitt schlepping back to her hotel from the Palais. The newly promoted VP of acquisitions for Nickelodeon and fledgling 24-hour digital channel Nicktoons is making it her MIPCOM mandate to see as much new product as possible as she maps out next year’s prebuys and straight-up acquisitions.
Pitt will also serve as programming director for Nicktoons, working closely with channel VP and GM Keith Dawkins. So in addition to directing the diginet’s pick-up strategy, she’ll also be heavily involved in slotting the shows into the schedule. ‘The sky is the limit for blocks, expanding with new genres, and picking up shows that will complement the brand as it evolves, rather than cannibalizing the hits we’re already airing on Nick,’ she says.
Although Pitt’s eager to entertain pitches for shows that could work equally well on either Nick or Nicktoons, she says there’s now more of an opportunity to differentiate the channels’ respective programming lineups in order to more clearly identify Nicktoons as a home for the next generation of animation. Be it 2-D, 3-D or mixed-media, Pitt wants to see animated projects (and in some cases revisit previous pitches) that may not necessarily be right for Nick proper. She cites Nicktoons’ recent acquisition of Millimages’ Skyland as a good example of this new buying dynamic. ‘I saw it, I loved it, but I didn’t know where we were going to place it because sci-fi is such a hard fit for Nick.’
Pitt says she’s planning to get in touch with a handful of producers to set up repitch meetings, but she also wants to come away from MIPCOM with a long list of new potential acquisitions so she can custom-tailor unique lineups for the two channels. So if you’ve got any fresh toon concepts in your pitch arsenal, make sure you call Pitt’s office (212-258-8000) to get a meeting.
