March 5, 2018

The House of Mouse is paying homage to the character that started it all. Disney has kicked off a year-long, Mickey-themed 90th birthday celebration that includes an exclusive fashion show, new linear content and events at the company’s parks and resorts.

To mark the anniversary of Mickey Mouse’s debut in 1928’s Steamboat Willie, celebrations will begin with The Happiest Show on Earth on March 7. The runway fashion event featuring Mickey-inspired items designed by Opening Ceremony founders Carol Lim and Humberto Leon will close out Global Fashion Week events. Select items from the collaboration will be available immediately on shopDisney.com, OpeningCeremony.com and in Opening Ceremony stores, while remaining looks will hit mass-market retail in November. The fashion show will also honor Minnie Mouse, who was recently given an official star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The Disney Store will also mark the occasion with a Mickey Mouse Memories collection, featuring a monthly limited-release series of 12 collectible plush, mugs and cloisonné pins inspired by memorable Mickey movie roles. Disney Publishing Worldwide, meanwhile, will introduce more than 30 titles globally as a part of Mickey’s 90th.

Additional celebratory events include an ABC linear special honoring Mickey (a release date has yet to be announced), plus a fifth season of Mickey Mouse animated shorts on Disney Channel. Walt Disney Parks and Resorts will have commemorative merchandise and photo locations, as well as the World’s Biggest Mouse Party celebrating Mickey and Minnie at parks worldwide beginning at the end of 2018.

In France, meanwhile, 38 design and art schools will take part in a unique contest called Mickey is Art, where students will craft works of art combining Mickey and their favorite artistic movement. The winning designs will be displayed in 12 major French train stations this summer, and sold at the Galerie Glenat in Paris.
