Mmm. . . frozen stuff

This month, KidScreen’s quest to catalog the bizarre in licensing takes us to the frozen food aisle of U.K. supermarkets

In what likely amounts to the cheekiest application of a license in recent years, 20th Century Fox Licensing and Merchandising has given the nod to Kerry Foods to develop a line of Homer TV Dinners, inspired by the dim-witted patriarch from Fox’s show The Simpsons. Homer’s TV Dinner range includes the Chili Mega Meal, a dinner for one containing rice, chili, nachos, salsa and sour cream; and the Hot Curry Banquet, a no-less-spicy number of chicken curry, rice, onion bhajis and raita dip.

Kerry’s decision to license Homer to promote a food line is a peculiar one, considering that throughout the TV series, the character’s rather liberalized palate has led him to devour an assortment of rancid meats and decade-old boxes of baking soda, among other questionable dietary choices. The meals retail for US$5 each and are currently available in the U.K. only at Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury.
