Looking to further strengthen its foothold in the US, UK-based kids edutainment company Sandbox & Co (SBX) has acquired preschool SVOD app Curious World from global learning company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
The deal sees SBX add Curious World to the company’s expanding portfolio of digital brands, which includes Poptropica, Tinybop, Hopster, Funbrain and Family Education, to name a few.
Secured on behalf of Figjam Group, the 100% acquisition covers all aspects of the Curious World app, including its roster of 1,000-plus games, videos and eBooks for children ages two to seven, content from the Curious George books and app series, as well as the app’s parental dashboard that helps track a child’s activity in eight learning areas.
Since launching in 2014, kid-safe and ad-free Curious World has generated millions of downloads in the US, driven by a lineup of original series—including Through the Woods and A Rhino Named Paul—and licensed short-form videos, games and eBooks curated by early learning experts. The platform also snapped up a Kidscreen Award for Best Learning App in 2017.
The acquisition follows SBX’s deal with Playwire earlier this month, which will see the COPPA-compliant digital group represent online advertising for Sandbox Networks’ web and mobile properties.
