Not content with dictating the pop tastes of global tween culture, MTV is poised to expand the reach of its brand in the world of consumer electronics. The Viacom-owned music video channel recently signed an agreement with Edgewater, New Jersey-based company Refac Consumer Products to create a range of MTV-branded electronics, including portable stereos and CD players, head phones, earbuds, walkie-talkies, and sport, shower and clock radios. All the MTV gear will be available at music, electronic and department store retailers in fall 2001. The Refac agreement is the second licensing deal that MTV has signed in the last year that covers the electronics category. In June, MTV licensee Manley Toy Quest launched a line of MTV logoed electronic musical toys at specialty retailers in the U.S.
