Game-based platform Tynker released its latest kids coding app Tynker Junior on the Apple App Store today for a subscription fee of US$9.99, or US$0.99 per month.

Aimed at four-to seven-year-olds, the iPad-only app marks a change for the tech company, which has focused its efforts on older kids up to this point with its Tynker: Coding Games for Kids platform. The new offering features three games with more than 100 coding challenges. Ocean Odyssey, Robots! and Wild Rumble aim to teach young learners basic programming concepts like sequencing, pattern recognition, loops and counters. It also accommodates kids’ varying reading and writing levels, limited motor skills and developing hand-eye coordination by incorporating word-free blocks and a tap-based interface with voiceovers, helpful hints and progressing difficulty levels to motivate completion.

Tynker’s older-skewing app is currently used by a third of US elementary schools and more than 60 million kids across 150 countries. The company works with global partners including Apple, Microsoft, Mattel, PBS and Sylvan Learning. Recently, it expanded its 2015 partnership with Mattel to launch a Barbie coding initiative with the goal of teaching 10 million kids (and especially girls) how to code by 2020.
