Brøderbund Software, producer of the popular Carmen Sandiego software series, has been acquired in a US$420 million dollar stock swap by one of its chief competitors, The Learning Company. The acquisition is representative of a consolidation trend that is sweeping the educational software industry. The Learning Company and Cendant Software have recently devoted their efforts to aggressive marketing and price-cutting, putting a squeeze on the competition. In June, after sustaining a third quarter loss, Br¿derbund hired the investment banking firm of Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette to guide it out of the red, resulting in the stock swap deal.
