Ken Faier’s Epic Story Media has inked a deal with DHX Media that will see Epic develop transmedia content based on the kids TV show Slugterra.

Epic Story is in development with DHX on Slugisodes (20 x five minutes), a series of animated shorts featuring new characters in addition to existing ones from the hit series. The project, which features no dialogue, is being targeted for a 2020 launch on YouTube through DHX’s Wildbrain network. According to Epic Story, the Slugterra property has reached 1.5 billion total views on YouTube.

Faier is well acquainted with the Slugterra universe, having executive produced the TV show at Nerd Corps Entertainment, which was acquired by DHX in 2014. The TV show ran for four seasons between 2012 and 2016.

A former SVP and executive producer at DHX Media, Faier launched Epic Story two years ago with a mandate to build out kids franchises with multiple IP points and revenue streams. At the time, he also acquired DHX’s Vancouver-based interactive division. More recently, Bron Ventures—a division of Bron Studios geared toward making equity investments in other production companies—took a minority stake in Epic Story. The company then built out its executive ranks in April with the hires of Jessica Labi, a former SVP of kid-focused producer/distributor Viva Pictures, and David Sztoser, who was previously the VP of toys for Nickelodeon’s New York office.

In addition to Slugisodes, Epic Story said it is in development on a Slugterra live-action game show on behalf of DHX. The game show will be based on a new Slugterra VR game that was created by Dark Slope Studios. That location-based, multi-player VR game is set to be released later this year at a number of locations across the world.

Epic Story’s interactive division is also in development on a Slugterra mobile game, set to launch in the third quarter of 2020. The six previous Slugterra mobile games have been downloaded 40 million times, according to a press release.

In addition to its various Slugterra-based projects, Epic Story announced it is also developing a franchise plan for the reboot of the sci-fi action TV series Chaotic. The original show, produced by Chaotic USA and 4Kids Entertainment, aired on Cartoon Network, Disney XD and CW 4Kids in the U.S. and Teletoon in Canada. Epic Story has appointed California-based Televix Entertainment to handle broadcast sales of the series in Latin America, and will showcase the property at both Brand Licensing Europe and MIPCOM.
