Scholastic has launched a monthly bestsellers list based on purchases made through its US network of in-school Book Clubs. Read on for the top-five picture books, transitional readers, early chapter books, chapter books, middle grade, young adult and non-fiction from January 2011.

The top-five picture books:

1. The Night Before Valentine’s Day by Natasha Wing
2. I SPY Little Hearts by Jean Marzollo and Walter Wick
3. Dinosaurs Love Underpants by Claire Freedman
4. Every Cowgirl Needs a Horse by Rebecca Janni
5. There Was a Coyote Who Swallowed a Flea by Jennifer Ward

The top-five books for transitional readers:

1. Clifford’s Big Red Reader: Valentine Surprise
2. Fancy Nancy: My Family History by Jane O’Connor
3. Hot Wheels: Thrill Ride
4. Fancy Nancy and the Delectable Cupcakes by Jane O’Connor
5. Spider-Man Versus the Green Goblin

The top-five early chapter books:

1. The Puppy Place: Bella by Ellen Miles
2. Moonlight on the Magic Flute (Magic Tree House #41) by Mary Pope Osborne
3. Stink: Solar System Superhero by Megan McDonald
