Texting still reigns supreme in the world of tweens and teens, according to a recent poll by Chicago-based youth insight service YouthBeat.
The survey shows that roughly 80% of US tweens ages 11 to 13 have texted in the past week, and the 19% of kids ages six through 10 who own a cell phone are sending an average of 16 text messages per day.
Both tweens and teens agree that texting is the preferred mode of communication with parents, friends and siblings. Among the tweens surveyed, 43% say they prefer texting to email. The poll indicates that many youth are likely to own an email address in order to have access to social networking sites rather than as a communication tool in itself.
