Reed Midem is cancelling plans for a live MIPCOM 2020 market, moving the event entirely online through its MIPCOM Online+ platform.
The virtual event will have three components: MIPCOM Warm Up, MIPCOM Week and MIPCOM Follow Up+. Beginning October 5, MIPCOM Warm Up will include market intelligence sessions, content and finance briefings, and the MIPJunior screening platform. There will also be a MIPCOM Digital Hub to plan meetings.
MIPCOM Week will be open from October 12 to 16 as a global online interactive business market including a digital conference and screenings programming. It will host the global upfronts, keynotes, market screenings and the MIPCOM Diversify TV Excellence Awards. There’s also a Virtual Exhibit Hub to help people set up video meetings with distributors, producers, buyers and international delegates.
MIPCOM Follow Up+ runs from October 17 to November 17, and will feature replays of screenings, keynotes and conference sessions from both MIPCOM and MIPJunior.
This cancellation news comes on the heels of several pandemic-related pivots for MIPCOM, which was originally set to take place as a hybrid physical and digital event. At the end of July, Reed Midem announced it was merging MIPJunior with MIPCOM and shortening the overall event. At the time, the organizers also planned to do away with exhibition stands at the in-person part of the event.
But all of these adjustments were not enough to save the live iteration, and Reed Midem has attributed its cancellation decision to the “continued impact of COVID-19.” MIPCOM’s move to digital follows the recent announcement that Cartoon Forum has also pulled the plug on its live event due to increased travel restrictions affecting several areas in France, including the region where the annual pitch fest takes place.
