CMC goes virtual for a second year

Taking a cautious approach, the conference will run online from July 5 to 9, with webinars dropping ahead of time.

The Children’s Media Conference (CMC) is going virtual again with its annual conference. Scheduled to run July 5 to 9, this year’s program will feature webinars, keynotes, panels and networking opportunities.

In 2020, CMC (which traditionally takes place in Sheffield) shifted to a digital event for the first time due to the pandemic, with an offering that included pre-event webinars in advance of the main content and networking program.

Sticking with that gameplan, the organization is planning to run monthly webinars on its YouTube channel ahead of this year’s virtual conference, covering topics such as producing during the pandemic (March 26), connecting with China (April 21) and building content’s impact (May 21). It will also present an introduction to the event for first-timers (June 18) and host an International Exchange virtual market (July 1).

Going virtual in 2020 helped CMC draw a wider international audience, including producers and students who may not have been able to attend an in-person event.

The UK government is planning for the country to be fully open by June 21, but only 1.69% of its population had been fully vaccinated at press time, according to the John Hopkins University of Medicine. Many countries are also still not allowing international air travel, and those that are tend to have specific guidelines including mandatory quarantines or isolation periods.
