Renewals: Ghosts & crafts get reupped in August

A lot more SpongeBob content is on the way, Disney is banking on all things spooky, and Sky wants more music and activities.

Disney Channel has ordered a second season of animated comedy The Ghost of Molly McGee (pictured), ahead of its October 1 premiere. Disney Television Animation produces the buddy comedy that follows the adventures of an optimistic tween and a grumpy ghost. Format and delivery date details for season two aren’t available yet. Season one (20 x 11 minutes) will roll out weekly until November 27 on Disney Channel and Disney+. To support the release, Disney Channel is also launching three companion shorts called Chibi Tiny Tales on linear, YouTube and mobile app DisneyNOW, as well as a Bandshell Boo-nanza! game on DisneyNOW.

Disney Junior is swinging into a second season of Marvel’s Spidey and his Amazing FriendsThe action-adventure animation sees a young Spider-Man and his friends team up with other superheroes to battle villains. Marvel’s first full-length show for preschoolers, the series premiered on linear August 6, and the first seven episodes will launch on Disney+ on September 22. There were no additional details available about season two at press time.

Nickelodeon and Paramount+ are mining Bikini Bottom for more content. Nick has greenlit 13 new episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants, marking its 13th season, along with a second 13-episode season of The Patrick Star Show, which sees Patrick hosting a variety series. On the streaming side, Paramount+ has ordered a 13-episode second season of Kamp Koralthe CG-animated prequel to SpongeBob SquarePants.

WarnerMedia’s Indian kids channel POGO has ordered a second season of Cosmos-Maya’s Titoo series (52 x half hours), as well as four 80-minute specials. Titoo is about an eight-year-old who tries to help everyone but always ends up in some kind of trouble.

UK broadcaster Sky Kids has commissioned a second season (20 x 11 minutes) of TG Entertainment’s The Brilliant World of Tom Gates. The mixed-media series sees live-action presenter Liz Pichon encouraging kids to be crafty through games and songs. Season two is in production now and will premiere on Sky’s on-demand service Sky Kids and streamer NOW in the UK and Republic of Ireland in early 2022. The broadcaster has also ordered a short-form music series that will launch later this year, and a 22-minute seasonal special that’s in production now. WildBrain manages global distribution for the IP’s content.
