Kidscreen has confirmed that Chris Paolini’s bestselling YA book series, which has already spawned live-action feature film Eragon (2006), is currently in development as a live-action TV series for Disney+.

Disney Branded Television and 20th Television are producing the series for the streamer, with Paolini (pictured) on board as an executive producer and co-writer. Bert Salke will also executive produce through his Co-Lab 21 shingle.

The concept is based on Paolini’s novels about a boy in a magical land who discovers a dragon egg and then teams up with its newly hatched dragon to fight an evil king. Paolini and Disney could not confirm the series length or release date at this time.

The Inheritance book series (which Paolini initially self-published in 2002) has sold more than 35 million copies worldwide, according to current publisher Knopf. Box Office Mojo data shows that the feature film Eragon, distributed by 20th Century Fox, grossed roughly US$250 million worldwide against a US$100-million budget.

Disney+ seems to be hot for kids fantasy concepts right now. The SVOD is prepping a Percy Jackson show based on Rick Riordan’s YA book series, which has also spawned multiple films. And a new series inspired by George Lucas’s Willow pic is also in production for a November launch.

Beyond the House of Mouse, Netflix was poised to add a Warner Bros. Animation Wings of Fire adaptation to its kids fantasy catalogue (which includes Wonderstorm animated series The Dragon Prince). However, it canceled the project in May.
