Several international distributors have been signed to rep an upcoming CG-animated film from Belgian prodco Studio 100 Media based on Johanna Spyri’s classic children’s novel Heidi.

Heidi—Rescue of the Lynx is aimed at kids ages five to 10 and their families. It’s slated for a 2024 release, with Belgium’s Fabrique Fantastique (Sir Mouse) on board as a co-producer.

Studio 100 has secured film distributors in several new territories, including Leonine Studios (German-speaking territories), Adler (Italy), Kaleidoscope (UK), NOS Lusomundo (Portugal), FilmHouse (Israel) and Blitz (ex-Yugoslavian territories). And it’s not stopping there.

Thorsten Wegener (Maya the Bee) is on board as the film’s EP, with Fabrique’s Tom Van Gestel (Fox and Hare) producing and directing, and Rob Sprackling (Gnomeo & Juliet) penning the script.

Originally published in 1881, Sypri’s novel centers around a five-year-old girl who lives in the Swiss Alps with her grandfather. In line with the property’s adjacency to ecology and nature, the upcoming film will explore a new storyline featuring a lynx family and tackle topics like deforestation.

Heidi’s previous adaptations include a 1937 live-actioner starring Shirley Temple, a 1968 LP and read-along book by Disneyland Records, and a 1982 animated film from Hanna-Barbera.

Studio 100 owns the rights to the Heidi brand, including Heidi, Girl of the Alps, a 1974 anime series from Japanese studio Zuiyo. The prodco also worked on a preschool-skewing CG-animated remake of the series in 2015 for German broadcaster ZDF.
