The first-ever Children’s and Family Emmy Awards, held by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), saw a Netflix sweep led by series including Heartstopper (pictured) and Maya and the Three.

The ceremony was held over two nights, with NATAS awarding the creative arts categories on December 10 and all other categories on December 11.

The first night saw Disney+ live-action film Sneakerella (New York’s Jane Startz Productions) and Netflix CG-animated series Maya and the Three (Canada’s Tangent Animation) walk away with three wins each. Netflix took home a total of 13 prizes during the Creative Arts ceremony, followed closely by Disney+ with 10.

Apple TV+ scored two wins, including the Outstanding Non-Fiction Program award for the documentary Who Are You, Charlie Brown? from Canada’s WildBrain. And Endlings (Hulu) from Sinking Ship Entertainment took home the trophy for Outstanding Visual Efforts for a Live-Action Program.

In the evening’s only tie, Muppets Haunted Mansion (Disney+) and Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock (Apple TV+) shared top honors in the Art Direction/Set Decoration category.

On night two, Netflix took the lead again with 15 wins followed by Disney+ with four. The former’s teen live-actioner Heartstopper—which centers on a love story between two school boys—was the biggest winner with a total of five awards, including the Outstanding Young Teen Series trophy. The streamer’s comedy series The Baby-Sitters Club, which was cancelled in March, also triumphed with double wins for Outstanding Children’s or Family Viewing Series and Outstanding Writing for a Live-Action Preschool or Children’s Program.

Netflix’s animation entries did just as well as its live-action ones, with recognition for titles like Hilda and the Mountain King (Outstanding Special Class Animated Program) and City of Ghosts (Outstanding Directing for an Animated Program). Overall, the streaming giant earned 28 trophies across the two-night event.

This is the first time kids and youth programming has been recognized in a dedicated ceremony, separate from the Daytime Emmys. The shift was made in response to a rapid growth in submissions, which hit nearly 3,000 this year, according to NATAS.
